Scottdale seeks next garbage carrier

Scottdale Borough Council needs to decide on its next garbage carrier since its contract with Waste Management of North Huntingdon expires May 31.
Under the current contract, residential customers pay $15.33 per month for weekly collection. The borough provides monthly recycling pickup at no charge.
Three garbage firms submitted bids for a five-year contract, which would run from June 1 to May 31, 2013. Borough solicitor Randy Klimchock opened and read the bids at a special meeting Monday. He and borough officials will examine the documents more closely and make a recommendation at the next council meeting, at 6:30 p.m. April 14.
Veolia Environmental Services of McClellandtown’s bid for commercial and residential customers totaled $2.23 million with a fuel cost adjustment and $2.3 million with no fuel cost adjustment. The latter bid would bind Veolia to the bid no matter the cost of fuel.
Under Veolia’s proposal, residential customers would pay $13.44 monthly the first year for weekly garbage pickup, with rates rising incrementally to $14.68 in the fifth year of the contract, without a fuel cost adjustment. With a fuel cost adjustment, the base amount would be $13.05 the first year and $14.54 the fifth year.
Recycling without a fuel cost adjustment would cost $1.01 per month the first year and $1.14 the fifth year. With a fuel cost adjustment, recycling would cost $1.01 per month the first year and $1.11 per month the fifth year.
Waste Management of North Huntingdon submitted a bid for residential and commercial removal that does not include any fuel cost adjustments. The differences in prices depend on where the trash is placed. Rear alley pickup will cost $2.983 million and curbside pickup will cost $3.159 million.
Residential customers would pay $16.72 monthly the first year for alley collection, with the rate rising incrementally to $19.56 in the fifth year. For curbside collection, residential rates start at $17.94 the first month and will rise to $20.99 the fifth year.
